Title: Is there any possible way to see it?
Post by: coreyankee3 on February 15, 2005, 08:17:25 AM
I am aware that there were only two copies of The Boy Castaways.

But I was wondering if, by any possibility, there was a way to read a copy of the book.  I feel that it may shed some light on my problem.  I'm really just wondering if anyone has actually read any of it, and if it is extremely hard for one to be allowed to read the contents of it.  I think that Mr. Birkin has read it, but I'm still not even sure of that fact.

Basically, I'm just inquiring for any more info on "The Boy Castaways".  I've already exhausted all the info on the site.  lol

Thanks

There's nothing to read - the book contains only the 36 photos reproduced on this site, along with the captions and chapter headings for chapters that were never written.

If you go to the Yale Library, will they let folks look at it?  I know all the pics are here on the site, but the idea of holding the book in my hand sends chills down my spine!

It's actually the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, which us on the Yale Campus. Yes, inprinciple anyone can visit, though you may have to blag that you're writing a book/thesis to actually get to hold any of the originals. I suggest you visit their website for up to date details...

I think someone should get this into publication, as a sort of coffee table oddity. The whole thing replicated in finite detail, including glued photos as opposed to printed pages.

I suggested doing this to GOSH in 1998 - an exact facsimile reprint of the Boy Castaways, to be released as a fund-raiser in August 2001 = the centenary. Trouble was, GOSH aren't allowed to publish stuff themselves, being a charity.

I could virtually make one myself, having 5^ x 4" copy negatives of the entire book, which is now out of copyright btw. If anyone wants to have a go, let me know and I'll loan you the negs!
