General topic / Re: Strange but True department.

Yes, I discovered the link many years ago when one of the Buxtons, who ran Anglia television, asked me to write a script about Tim Birkin for – wait for it – Rowan Atkinson! I gratefully declined as I couldn’t see what the story was, nor – much as I admired him as a comedian – could I see Blackadder in the part. They went ahead anyway, and when I watched it years later, I gave a sigh of relief that it had nothing to do with me!

General topic / Strange but True department.

As far as I know Andrew has never mentioned this. Sir Henry Birkin, better known as Tim Birkin, was a famous racing car driver in the 1920s and early 1930s. One of his daughters married, not once but twice, into the Buxton family and was known socially as "Lady Buxton". So, a cousin of Andrew's married two cousins of Rupert's (please note:at different times). Now, I don't hold with conspiracy theories but ...

That’s so cool that you visited the graves!
RIP Michael and Rupert! ❤️

I visited Michael's grave (and his grandfather's and family grave, pretty much all places related to them in and around London) two days ago. The graveyard was overgrown, but there was a trampled path to his grave and the family grave. Someone had left a bouquet of roses on the family grave. There were also wild flowers placed on top of Michael's grave. I read in another post that Nico's daughter had intended to have his name added to it but it hadn't been.

Peter Pan / My Peter Pan Stage Adaptation
« Last post by Dani1923 on May 12, 2023, 12:11:43 PM »
I’ve started writing my first draft script for my own stage adaptation of Peter Pan!
So far I’ve written five scenes and I’m starting on the sixth scene, which will be the last scene of Act One.
If you anyone would like me to send them what I’ve written so far, please let me know! I really would to like get feedback from people on this forum! I’m not only making this adaptation to satisfy me, but also my fellow Pan Fans!
To give you a bit of a hint of what I’m going for in this adaptation, you can read my review I did on Andrew’s Peter Pan 1989 film script, and I’ve used a lot of the suggestions that I made on that.
I would say, in my script, half of the dialogue is mine, and half is Barrie’s. Some of it is little Easter Eggs that are a nod to Peter Pan films or films related to Peter Pan, like The Lost Boys.
I will update you on my progress on this play as time goes on!
I would like to have it performed and even direct the show myself, and have the play published.
This play will be meant for community theatres.

Thank you for replying Brutus!
And thank you for reading my detailed review!
Like I said in the review, I would say that you should watch Peter Pan and Wendy and form your own opinion, but the more I think about it, the movie is just so bad and so far from Barrie’s vision, that it’s not even worth watching! Especially if you’re a member of this forum!
I had hope for the at first with two main trailers, but then when the clips started getting released, that hope quickly died, and honestly, the only reason I felt I needed to watch it was to basically be the guinea pig and test out the movie and inform my fellow Pan Fans on this forum if the movie was worth watching, which of course it’s not! So yeah, skip the movie!
No, the Peter in this recent movie does not have pointy ears. But he has pointy shoes though.
The reason I gave Pan a 1 and not a 0 is really because of the performances of Levi Miller and Hugh Jackman. I honestly haven’t watched this film in years so there’s a lot I don’t remember, but I do remember their performances being good even if their characters were not. I really wish they could have been in a faithful direct adaptation film of Peter Pan as Peter and Hook!
I didn’t include Syfy’s Neverland because that’s technically not a film. Ironically, when I reviewed it on the forum back in 2020, I called it a film the entire time! It’s basically just two really long episodes of a TV show. I actually haven’t watched it since I saw it and reviewed it over 2 years ago, but I just re-read my review of the series and I do still remember some bit and pieces of it. I didn’t give an actual rating in my review, but even though my 2020 self probably would’ve given this series a 3/10, my 2023 self would agree with you and give it a 1/10. Like Pan, the 1 comes from the good performances from the actors!
2 or 3 years ago, I reviewed a bunch of Peter Pan related media for the forum, tv series, feature-length films, short films, and a stage production that either were talked about very little or not at all on this site, and that’s why I watched and reviewed Neverland in the first place. Looking back, I was way too nice in some of those reviews, and if I re-reviewed those products now, I would probably have a much more negative view on them!
As time as gone on, and as it stands currently, I’m of the opinion that if your interpretation doesn’t have Barrie’s spirit, whether you’re making a prequel, sequel, or a different interpretation of the original story, then you’re doing it wrong! And a lot of people who try to adapt the Peter Pan story in some way, get it very wrong! There are movies that aren’t related to Peter Pan in any way that are more like a Peter Pan movie than most of the actual Peter Pan movies, like Where the Wild Things Are or Song of the Sea. The GOSH Peter and Wendy movie is the only actual Peter Pan movie to capture Barrie’s spirit! Although I will give the benefit of the doubt and say that Hook comes close, at least that movie was made by somebody who actually cared about the source material! Although ironically, Spielberg hates Hook now and has pretty much disowned it!
I’m sorry this comment is so long! I’m wrapping it up!
No, I’ve never seen the Russian Peter Pan movie. At least not the whole movie. I think I’ve seen bits and pieces of it though. Is it any good? After Peter Pan and Wendy, I am in absolutely no mood to watch another bad Peter Pan movie!
Plus, right now I’m actually working on a project that I’m pretty excited about that I will talk about on this forum very soon…..
Let’s just say all these bad Peter Pan adaptations have finally broken me, but have also encouraged me to take action….😉

Hi Dani
Pretty much how I would rate these too - except I haven't seen Peter Pan & Wendy as yet, but I'm fairly prejudiced against it anyway, as I don't like what Disney do to the original stories and I never particularly liked their 1953 cartoon. Plus your detailed review would have put me off anyway - thanks for that, saved me wasting time watching it... By the way, have they again made Peter an elf in the movie, with silly pointy ears?

As for Pan, I would give it 0/10 - it was just awful, and made absolutely no sense at all. You haven't rated SyFy Channel Neverland miniseries, but that also deserved a 1/10 (Harry Potter meets Oliver Twist, with a sprinkling of Peter Pan).

I also loved the GOSH-based Peter & Wendy, although I thought Paloma Faith was totally miscast as Tinker Bell.

Did you have a look at the Russian 1987 version? Peter Pan looks like Little Lord Flaunteroy... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv7m8Q9YdO4

Peter Pan / Re: Peter Pan and Wendy Detailed Review

Thank you so much Andrew for reading my review!
Had other people not been around me when I first read your comment, I would have burst out laughing at what your mom said about the 2003 movie! That bit of criticism is more brutal (and more valid!) than what any professional critic could ever write! 😂😂😂😂
I would recommend that you watch the recent film and form your own opinion, but I don’t want to put you in an early grave! So you can definitely skip it! 😂
Much love to you Andrew! ❤️

Many thanks for your take on this, Dani, which seems to reflect the general opinioin of crits on Rotten Toms. I remember watching the 2003 effort with my mum, who was dying in hospital. At a certain [point she said, "I've seen enough. To watch any more will only speed up my demise."  I feel much the same about this latest reboot.  Thanks for the warning!
