Peter Pan in Other Stories
« on: November 25, 2020, 01:13:43 PM »
Peter's shadow sometimes sneaks his way into other stories. I'm not talking about those ghastly sequels and reimaginings, but other stories entirely where he's inspiring, but not trying to be captured. For instance, I loved the scene in ET (The Extra Terrestrial) where the mother is reading the girl the "Do You Believe in Fairies?" chapter. But I wanted to talk about books...

I've been reading some contemporary children's literature. I just read a beautiful book to my students called "Planet Earth is Blue", which is narrated by a space-loving girl with Autism. She also loves the original Peter Pan, and sometimes there are strong connections to her story and Peter's. I just picked up a binding called "Forever Neverland" which, interestingly enough, is also about the world of Autism (I haven't read that one yet, so don't know if it's any good - the subject of Autism and Peter could be another post in itself). It's just kind of nice and even a bit inspiring to see Peter sneak his way through other books that understand him in a way rip-offs never could.

Anyone else catch Peter in some book or other? If so, where? Did it make you understand him in a different way?

I can’t think of any books that I’ve read where Peter’s shadow lingers, and unfortunately I don’t read as much as I used to when I was younger.

But I love the idea of seeing connections with the Peter Pan story and characters and autism! I’m not autistic, but I think it would be fascinating to read about those connections!
