Videos/DVDs
« on: November 25, 2006, 12:30:38 PM »
Hi, does anyone know if (or where) it is possible to purchase videos or DVDs of JM Barrie plays, eg Little Minister, Dear Brutus, Quality Street etc? I've looked in the obvious places (eg Amazon) but I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks for any info!

Your best bet is probably eBay, especially if you don't mind 'unofficial' recordings.  I've seen The Admirable Chrichton on there recently (it's still there, actually), both under its proper title and also under the title Paradise Lagoon!  There's also been Quality Street in the past, and I expect there have been others.  The Little Minister (Katherine Hepburn's version) was officially released in the USA on Laserdisc, and a copy of this is currently available on eBay - but who's got a Laserdisc player these days???

Cecil B DeMille's 1919 silent film version of The Admirable Crichton (with Gloria Swanson) is available on DVD. De Mille renamed it "Male and Female", allegedly after receiving a Western Union telegram from Barrie referring to "Admiral" Crichton - clearly a mistake on the part of the transcriber... but as de Mille said, if a telegram boy can misread it, so can most of the movie-going public..........
