Who is Liza

We are performing Peter Pan in 2014 and read through the play today.   Liza appears to play a more pivotal role than what most theater houses play her.  She travels to Neverland  and lays flowers by Peter, talks to animals, then asks Peter to teach her to how to crow.

We need some help in understanding who is she really.....

In Barrie's play, Liza is the Darlings' "little maid" who doesn't have a major role: she only appears in the Nursery scene and at the end of the play, when she discovers she is Slightly's mother. She has even less of a part in the novel. In modern adaptations of the play, she rarely appears, particularly the pantomimes here in the UK. However, I suspect you are using the American musical version which I believe gives Liza a bigger part - but I'm not sure whether she is supposed to be more than the "little maid". Perhaps others here have a better interpretation and understanding of this version?

Thanks Gosh...clearly the Americanized musical version plays it up  a bit more, but, leaves it hanging out there.  It is a little appearance much like a fairie or ghost.   thanks for the explanation though--that actually ties in well!  We actually see her as a spirit almost thanking Peter for some course of action and maybe taking care of slightly is that course of action to thank.
