JM Barrie

What is the name of the "ruined keep" that was JM Barrie's and James McMillan's favourite place to visit near Dumfries? It was the same place where they hid in a crevice in the ruin "something about themselves in cryptogram" with a plan to visit it again "when they were men"?

Now actually being in Dumfries I have found that ruined castle and it is just outside the town of Torthorwald on the A709 on the road to Lochmaben.

Great that you found it! I had tried to find out more about it, but no luck.

Does the ruined castle have a name? Next time I'm in Dumfries, I'll look out for it.

The name of the ruined castle is Torthorwald Castle. There are lots of pictures on the web when you search the name. Interestingly the wikipedia entry (below) says that the castle is in the center of the village of Torthorwald, this is not correct. It is just on the western edge of the village, about 40 meters from the nearest house. Driving from Dumfries towards Lochmaben, it is very easy to see, being close to the road.

PS Does anyone find the verification questions inflexible? Number when adding f.o.u.r & s.i.x is not ten, number of wheels on a trike is not three…..

Thanks for the information. I will definitely look out for it next time I'm in (or near) Dumfries.

As for the verification questions, other people have had problems too so I'll report it to the administrators.
