There will be a screening of the classic 1924 silent film of Peter Pan in the Caird Hall, Dundee on Friday 24th November 2017 at 7.30 p.m. Donald MacKenzie, organist of The Odeon, Leicester Square, London, will provide improvised accompaniment on the magnificent Caird Hall concert organ.
The film was the first screen adaptation of J M Barrie's stage play. He wrote additional scenes for the cinema and personally chose the teenage Betty Bronson for the title role. For many years it was thought that all copies had been lost - distributors destroyed reels when they no longer made money after the advent of the talkies. However, in the 1950s a copy was found in the vaults of the Eastman School of Music. Another was later discovered at the Disney Studios and both prints have been used to create a new restoration. Directed by Herbert Brenon, the film stars Betty Bronson as Peter Pan, Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Mary Brian as Wendy, and Virginia Browne Faire as Tinker Bell.
