"They dont want us to land"

This passage has given me a very creepy vibe ever since I first read it. Wendybird & I have pondered over who the "they" is referred to here. They go unnamed, and also seem to be capable of manipulating air viscosity, or perhaps what in modern fantasy would be described as force-fields (if its meant to be literal). But who the heck are "they?" Anyone else ever given this some thought?

They had been flying apart, but they huddled close to Peter now. His careless manner had gone at last, his eyes were sparkling, and a tingle went through them every time they touched his body. They were now over the fearsome island, flying so low that sometimes a tree grazed their feet. Nothing horrid was visible in the air, yet their progress had become slow and laboured, exactly as if they were pushing their way through hostile forces. Sometimes they hung in the air until Peter had beaten on it with his fists.

"They don't want us to land," he explained.

"Who are they?" Wendy whispered, shuddering.

But he could not or would not say.

Well, I always imagined the Neverland as having a soul, or something or someone at its core, somewhat 'controlling' it, if that makes any sense. Thats who I think "They" are.

Funny, every time I struggle to do something (like, say, read Wuthering Heights ^^) I always think of that passage!
I don't know what "they" are, but it's an interesting question...
