Barrie 2010 - participate!
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:48:44 PM »
Lis Hill, co-ordinator of Barrie 2010, the series of events in Kirriemuir to celebrate JMB was kind enough to mail me the full programme of events. Everybody can participate to these events and even do something to help. For instance, since I am a photographer, I will be taking photos of Kirriemuir and then leave them to the Heritage Trust to use them as they see fit for free.

Hope to see many of you in lovely Kirriemuir in a month time! Andrew I will be seeing you on the 9th!

Remember, everybody can visit www.barrie2010.org.uk for further information.

Kisses to all,

Alice J. Redaelli

                                           Barrie 2010 Full Programme

In a tribute to the town’s most famous son, Kirriemuir Heritage Trust presents a packed programme of events designed to appeal to children and adults of all ages and tastes. This is a great opportunity to join in the celebrations. There’s something for everyone: drama, literary events including readings and book signings by a host of authors, story telling, writing workshops, folk music, drama workshops, puppets, dance, poetry, opportunities to trace your ancestors, exhibitions, guided walks and much, much more.

The first weekend, Saturday & Sunday 8/9 May, is packed with events to celebrate the Birthday itself.
On the middle weekend, Saturday & Sunday 15/16 May, Kirriemuir will buzz as the Mini Arts Festival hits town. Over the two days, there will be arts and craft related activities designed to appeal to both children and adults (see separate programme or go on the website www.barrie2010.org.uk for up-to-date announcements). On Saturday 15th, Kirriemuir Town Hall is the place to catch up with a Local History and Genealogy Fair, one of a series promoted by Angus Council under the Tayroots banner.
The highlight of the final weekend of the festival, Friday to Sunday 21/23 May, is the performance on the 15th and 16th by Splinters Productions of a new play Home to Neverland in which Barrie as the narrator links excerpts from his plays. The event, promoted by Angus Council, is followed on Sunday 23rd by two drama workshops for children. The festival will be rounded off with a grand ceilidh featuring the best of Scottish traditional music and song by many of the best and most talented performers in Angus and beyond

Hi to whoever's making the trek north of the border,

VW prevailing, I'll be in Kirriemuir for that 7.30 round-the-table blah blah on Saturday evening. I'm staying with my wife Karen and baby Emily at a remote place called Claypots; Emily has cystic fibrosis, so we have to keep her (and us) well away from germs. Don't think me paranoid if I get out the hand gel... or antisocial if I don't hang out in the Airlie hotel bar till the small hours, but hopefully I'll get to meet anyone who wants to...

Safe journeys all!

I'm really sorry that I am unable to attend Barrie 2010 this weekend. I should have loved to have met some of you folks at long last. Have a great celebration!

I was surprised to read in The Scotsman, yesterday, that the new exhibition at Barrie's birthplace, which includes a previously undisplayed original Barrie manuscript, is to be officially opened tomorrow with the cutting of a ribbon by a "descendant of Barrie"!  How can a leading Scottish newspaper make such a gaffe?  The world knows that JMB had no children, for goodness' sake.  The "descendant", Harry Jamieson, lives in Kirriemuir and is understood to be distantly related to JMB, so perhaps Tanya Vaughan could kindly enlighten us as to how he fits into the Barrie family tree, please.

Well, well, well!  Here's how The Scotsman can make its mistake:

The revelation that a descendant of J M Barrie will cut the ribbon (on Sunday 9 May at 1pm) appears in black and white on the website of the National Trust for Scotland, owners of Barrie's birthplace.

See for yourself: http://www.nts.org.uk/Property/37/

We learn also that the NTS are granting free entry to Barrie's Birthplace to all persons whose name is Wendy. And elsewhere I have read that it is now possible for couples to marry in the house.  Commercialism evidently is a necessary evil nowadays.

Where Peter Pan was "born".

I have only recently found out how many Scottish Icons have been born, lived, worked and/or died in a 30 mile wide strip of land in the south west of Scotland.

My interest began when I was at college and studied an old "Robert Burns" map. It showed where he was born, where he died, and all the places connected with him during his short life. The map also showed other places of interest; places with other iconic figures who affected the world in some way:
John Loudon MacAdam, William Murdock, Alexander Flemming, John Boyd Dunlop, William Paterson, the list went on. After a wee bit more searching, I found numerous names which I recognised (and many I should have) as pioneers in science, prose, discovery etc.

So now I'm trying to promote the "Robert Burns Corridor Network" so that when someone interested in visiting places like Dumfries arrives they will find that they can visit: Moat Brae House and John Paul Jones' Museum, Robert Burns' Museum, Eliock House, Drumlanrig Bicycle Museum, Elisland Farm, Camera Obscura, etc, all in one day.

Eliock House: birth place of the original "Admirable (James) Crichton".
John Paul (Jones): Perhaps the original pirate captain who stirred JMB's imagination.
Elisland Farm: built and toiled on by Robert Burns before he moved to Dumfries.

MOAT BRAE HOUSE:
An adventure.

'Home to Neverland - A Window on J.M. Barrie'

Quote
'As part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary on May 9th of J.M. Barrie's birth, two performances will be given in the refurbished Town Hall in Kirriemuir on Friday 21st May and Saturday 22nd May 2010.

'Home to Neverland' is also being performed at Dumfries Academy on Saturday September 18th at the invitation of the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust. Barrie moved to Dumfries at the age of 13. The garden of Moat Brae House where the writer played as a boy was described in his memoirs as the magical inspiration for Peter Pan.
He recalled: 'Our escapades in a certain Dumfries garden which was an enchanted land to me was the genesis of this work'.
