New Girl who loves Hook!
« on: July 09, 2010, 12:50:23 PM »
Hey guys and girls

I've been a big fan of peter pan since I was young. Being a girl growing up in the 90's I watched the classics, but really liked Hook. I saw it last night on a movie channel and was looking for other people who like Peter Pan.

Anyone here enjoy Hook as much as me?

I like when the guy finds his marbles.

Hook was the big one for me back in the day too..simply because I knew there was more to the story than what Disney had...I don't care for the idea of a grown up Peter these days or the idea that it is a sequel as so many in the general public seem to think...but...it is quite funny and I still enjoy it as it's own entity. It holds a special place for keeping my interest over the years as I found out more and more..but knowing what I know now I can't love it as much for the same reasons I use to lol :) I do really love the '03 film though that could have been better in a few ways too.

I'm not a huge fan of the movie (too many inaccuracies for me >.>), but I must say that Dustin Hoffman is a brilliant actor. Hook was a radically different role for him, and he did a marvelous job, despite the inaccuracies of character reflected in the screenplay/script.

My absolute favorite movie.  Yes, it's not an accurate portrayal of so many things, but to me, it IS my Neverland.  I was introduced to Peter Pan through Disney, but both Hook and Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates were what did me in as a child.  Then I developed a deep love for the book, and it remains, by far, my favorite piece of entertainment.

But Hook is still my favorite movie.  Hoffman is brilliant and the movie is beautiful from an art point of view.  But what really does it for me is the music.  John Willimam's score is amazing.  It perfectly captures Neverland for me, and I hear it in my head for every version.  Truly amazing.

I won't deny that it's an excellent movie! That's for sure :D Steven Spielberg is probably the only one who could have truly pulled it off. Although, I must say - if I may - that Hoffman probably wasn't the perfect fit for the role. He is a brilliant, brilliant actor, but he didn't quite pull of the elegant Hook I would have liked to see. He certainly did the paranoid and obsessed very, very well, but not the elegance or grace.
But the movie really is brilliant on an artistic stance. The costuming alone is incredible...but the island as Spielberg imagined it is epically wonderful.
MUSIC! Hoorah! John Williams is an absolute beast of a composer <3 His fanfares are soooo incredible :)

I really liked how Hook looks in the film, though.  They got the hair right, and it's the only version I know of where his hair looks like long black candles, as stated in the book.  And his costume is amazing.  I love the denture they gave him, for whatever reason, it works very well. He's a bit TOO nice at times, and there are some moments that are too stereotype piratey for me, but all in all, I like him.
