Hi everyone!
I was looking my first edition of Peter and Wendy.. and in particular i was admiring the illustration made by badford titled: "to die will be an awfully big adventure ?"

So.. the question is: if you look closely at the picture you will  see that the title of the picture is:

"to die will be an awfully big adventure ?"

But.. in the text there isn't a question mark.. The text says:" It was saying, 'To die will be an awfully big adventure.'
In your opinion.. Is this an error by the illustrator bedford or not? Interesting...

Very curious indeed! I really don't think there is any way of knowing who is at fault. It could be, like you said, the illustrator's error, but it could also be the editor or publisher's.
The scene itself looks rather like a lithograph. Wether or not the text was part of the original lithograph would certainly lead to the conclusion that it is the artist's error. Certainly an interesting topic to ponder.
Interesting find!
