I am surprised that things have gone as far about Epstein ... I believe Epstein to be the big sculptor of his day, but he often does strange things that are at any rate beyond the understanding of plain men and women, and even actively repugnant to them. He would probably do either the best or the worst statue of T.H., while various others would do something pretty sure to be satisfactory, though not notable. With them "safety first" would be the words again, while with him there is a real risk, but a possibility of something fine beyond any others' attainments.
