to Mrs Hugh Lewis - 1916

Description

All alarms and excursions since we left you. Obviously we should never leave you. A bone of a partridge stuck in my throat at Wrest hospital and no tubes &c could force it down. Surgeon was to do a little operation and I set off for a nursing home (when Michael wrote you). Then another surgeon preferred to treat it medically for a few days first. Now there is so little pain that I probably have swallowed it, but I am to be x-rayed to find out. Rather useful to be useless just now because Peter arrived in England last night invalided (not bad -- a sort of eczema apparently that is very prevalent at the Front owing to general unhealthy conditions). He is in a hospital at Wandsworth but is to get round to us for an hour today and then I take Nicholas to Eton.
