to Charles Turley Smith - 1917

Have been across and back again and find your letter. I had some success. I got Peter to myself for two days. Perhaps the strangest thing I saw was from the Messene Ridge a German aeroplane suddenly emerged from a cloud and went for our six balloons. For them went in flames, but we saw the balloonists all to send safely by parachute -- a beautiful sight. The only time I was in any danger was searching for George's grave, which I found.
