Barrie's staff
« on: November 15, 2024, 08:42:13 PM »
I know Barrie had a butler and a secretary at Adelphi Terrace, but I was wondering if he had any more staff working there?

According to Denis Mackail (Barrie's biographer), Barrie employed Harry Brown as his butler and valet, and the latter's wife as his cook. They left their employment in 1922 due to Mrs Brown's health and retired to the country. Harry Brown was succeeded by "the pale and slightly sinister Frank Thurston" who remained with Barrie until the end, as his butler and valet.

R C Sheriff mentioned in his account of his visit to Barrie's flat (from A Leading Lady) that"a daily woman came in to cook and clear things up", so that's probably all the staff he had as he lived a very quiet life, especially towards the end.
