George in July, 1914, a few weeks before the outbreak of war. He seems to me to have the same faraway look in his eye that he occasionally had at Black Lake, reminiscent of this verse by that unhappy poet, A E Housman:
On the idle hill of summer,
Sleepy with the flow of streams,
Far I hear the distant drummer,
Drumming like a noise in dreams ...
