A short story written by J M Barrie in aid of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for Children, and published in The Princess Elizabeth Gift Book by Hodder & Stoughton, edited by Cynthia Asquith. The edition is undated but probably published in the 1930s, pre-WWII.
The Princess Elizabeth Hospital for Children was a Victorian hospital located in the East End of London, formerly the East London Hospital for Children, which amalgamated with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1942. The hospital is now closed.
The Gift Book includes stories and poems written by other notable authors such as Rudyard Kipling, G K Chesterton, Elizabeth Bowen, Walter de la Mare, Denis Mackail. It even includes Mickey Mouse illustrations donated by Walt Disney.
