Barrie's father, David Barrie, aged about 55 in 1870. He appears to have had little influence on his son's character and development, and is scarcely mentioned in any of Barrie's autobiographical writings, beyond a cursory reference to him in Margaret Ogilvy (1896) as "a man I am very proud to be able to call my father". Of course this may well have been mere deference to his father who did not relish the limelight of his son's fame.
David Barrie lived on for a further seven years after his wife's death in 1895, dying at the age of 87 in 1903.
