Gerald du Maurier in 1898. As Sylvia's much-loved younger brother, Gerald first met Barrie around 1900. Twi years later, Barrie assured him the part of Ernest in The Admirable Crichton in 1902, where he met his future wife Muriel Beaumont.
Although critical of Barrie in many ways, Gerald maintained a deep affection and understanding for him, rallying to his defence on several occasions. According to his daughter Daphne, Gerald knew that Barrie was far from normal, yet never felt him to be a threat to a child in any predatory sense.
