Gilbert Cannan, around the time he first met Mary Barrie (Ansell). According to his publisher Martin Secker, "Cannan was an exceptionally handsome young man, a martyr to his own good looks and the emotional complications they invariably led him into." Having first married Mary in 1910 "out of a sense of chivalry", the pair divorced in 1918. In 1925, Cannan was declared insane, and spent the rest of his life in a private sanitorium, finally dying in 1955.
