Michael aged 12 in the summer of 1912. This portrait of Michael, taken by Lizzie Caswall Smith, has been set in an idealised landscape in the Outer Hebrides, possibly following Michael's death in 1921.
Thepicture was the most prominent of those hanging in Barrie's Adelphi study, to the right of the inglenook, and is visible in many later photographs and paintings. ‘Itis as familiar an expression to me as if he himself had come intothis room to quiz me, not at all conscious of what was to befall, …while some photographs seem to foretell the whole tragic story,’wrote Barrie to Robert Boothby. ‘We know that because such havebeen there will be such again, though not for us.’
