There was no Lagoon scene in this first performance, and as to what motivated Barrie to write it remains something of a mystery, as does the decision to replace Nina Boucicault with Celia Loftus in the 1905 revival. Neither Mackail nor Lancelyn Green give any real explanation, and even Nico claimed ignorance when asked. Nor do Barrie's notebooks offer any clues; but at some point in the summer of 1905 he must have had a lightbulb moment and written what is perhaps the most famous line in the stage play: "To die will be an awfully big adventure" ...
