Gerrie's impression that Sylvia "wore her children as other people wear pearls or fox-furs"

She wore her children as other people wore pearls or fox furs. I got that impression. They were beautiful children, they were the background for her. But I never felt that when they were trouble, she was holding their heads, or taking their temperature. It was all Arthur doing that kind of thing. When Jack told me that kind of thing, he didn't realize the impression he was giving me. He adored his mother so it was hardly for me in saying anything against Sylvia.
